BAYarts collaborates with the Cleveland Photo Fest as a participating gallery. This photo exchange with Australia, centers on the classic theme of Mirrors and Windows: Each photograph is either a window through which you see the world, or a reflection of yourself and your own perspective of the world. Minor White championed and taught this theory in the 1950’s and 1960s. The phrase was made popular by John Szarkowski of the Museum of Modern Art NYC who, in 1978 displayed a seminal (and one of the earliest major) photography exhibition of the same name. White was a friend and advocate of Alfred Stieglitz and adopted much of Stieglitz’s theory of ‘equivalence’, where the image stands for something other than the subject matter.
