Welcome to the Makerspace Camp-the perfect place for young minds to create, explore and bring their ideas to life! Designed for campers ages 7-12, this camp is all about curiosity, creativity and problem solving.

Each camper will dive into hands-on projects involving crafting, building and experimenting with a wide range of tools and materials. Please make sure that your child is suited for this active 4-day camp so that they will have the best experience possible.

Big Backyard Art Camp is an outdoor focused creative adventure where campers explore art and nature in an engaging hands-on environment. Set in our sprawling BAYarts campus, the camp encourages young artists to connect with the outdoors while expressing themselves through a variety of artistic mediums while surrounded by the beauty and inspiration of nature. Activities may include plein-air painting, natural sculptures, eco-friendly crafts and more!

For students with little to no experience in the ceramic studio. Perhaps you have never taken a ceramics class, or you have but you want a refresher course. In this class we will learn the basics of wheel thrown and hand built ceramics, from wedging to glazing. Let us help you start on your clay journey! The classroom is wheelchair accessible.

A class for students at all skill levels. Whether you’re looking to perfect an already growing skillset, try working with clay for the first time, or unsure where you stand, this is the class for you. Join us as we all find new ways to approach and improve techniques in both hand built and wheel thrown ceramics. The classroom is wheelchair accessible.

Students will explore various building techniques to explore form, altering form, stacking forms and combining techniques to create new and interesting shapes in clay. Some assignments will be given.

Pottery is an exciting and mysterious craft, whether you imagine yourself on the potter’s wheel or creating hand built objects, we offer you everything you need to embark on a journey exploring the endless possibilities in ceramics. Continuing students may work on independent projects while beginners will be offered specific projects incorporating hand-building methods like slab, pinching and coiling creating a wide variety of ceramics for the home and garden. Amy received her B.F.A. from the University of Akron. Ten of her works are archived for the moon as part of the Lunar Codex Project. Her artwork has been featured in Fine Art Connoisseur Magazine and American Art Collector Magazine and her work is internationally collected. Let’s dive into the world of sea animals utilizing both ceramics and mixed media! We’ll sculpt a narwhal, make an octopus bowl and create our own imaginary sea animals. Using colored sand we’ll create a picture of your favorite sea animal.

This camp is all about the pets that we love! Furry, feathered, scaley or with a shell. Using ceramics and mixed media students will sculpt and paint a variety of projects inspired by their beloved pet.

In this team-taught camp, students will experience an hour of music and an hour of art each day. Your little ones will be moving and making music and art both inside and outside of the classroom. From START to FINISH the board game you’ve always dreamed of will come to life! Students will get to plan and design their game board, build and create game pieces, design their game box, and write their game instructions. Time will be reserved for students to play each other’s games and celebrate everyone’s victories!

Let’s explore all of the fun things we love to do in summer! Working with clay and mixed media we’ll make a sculpture of ourselves at the beach, create a sidewalk chalk drawing on a tile, make a portrait platter and head out for a scavenger hunt coupled with a journal of our finds.

Reptiles are beautiful creatures! Using clay and mixed media we’ll create sculptures, decorative tiles and platters using them as our inspiration. We’ll head out for a scavenger hunt to see if we can find any on campus, and record our findings in a journal.

You’ll create a piece of music with the intention to perform it on the final day of camp. Feel free to bring in an instrument if you have one to share during the week or to demonstrate, as students will gain confidence in their musical and artistic abilities and expression.

Soak in our beautiful campus while creating some amazing masterpieces! Young artists will explore a variety of techniques and mediums while working in the sunshine and enjoying hikes around the Metroparks for artistic inspiration. Always a popular camp!

Learn how to create unique fashion pieces by embellishing your own clothes. Use the sewing and embroidery skills from this 4-day workshop to make one-of-a kind t-shirts and jeans. 2 shirts will be provided. Students will need to provide their own jeans and any other clothing they would like to embellish. Students will also learn tie dying techniques and create custom foam stamps to use and create hand printed items. Further guidance about this will be sent home to registrants at least two weeks prior to the start of this camp. Please bring an allergy free lunch and drink each day.

We’ll capture imagery from in and around BAYarts of various subjects, including portraits, landscapes, found objects and more as well as our own collage creations. Special attention will be paid to seeing light, along with learning about photographic composition. Students will have the opportunity to discuss their work each session. Any digital camera/phone is appropriate.

Using paint, fabric markers, and fun embellishments, students will explore color, patterns, and lettering to create bold designs that show off their personality. Whether it’s a tote for carrying treasures or gear, a pouch for art supplies, a banner to decorate their room, each project will be totally one of a kind!

Let’s explore birds and their babies using ceramics and mixed media! We’ll be busy making a bird’s nest with eggs, sculpting and painting projects of birds caring for their hatchlings and creating a habitat using pinecones and natural materials.

Students will learn how to safely cut cardboard and the best ways to attach pieces together as they use these skills to assemble their creations.

Create a variety of faux stained glass windows and suncatchers using gallery glass paints, plexiglass and acrylic sheets.

We take classic storybook tales and flip them upside down! Maybe the princess rescues the dragon, or the villain turns out to be a hero. Through theatre games, character creation, and group songwriting, campers will work together to invent their own hilarious, unexpected version of a familiar fairy tale. The session ends with a mini performance where their reimagined story comes to life with costumes, movement, and music.

Young artists will dive into the playful side of painting. Instead of following strict rules, students will try out fun techniques like layering colors, wax resist, watercolor, acrylic, collage, making unique textures, and using unexpected tools. This camp will focus on making projects that are about your child created in both ceramics and mixed media. A self portrait sculpture, their favorite dessert painted on a platter, a hand painted clay tile and a cloud painting as we venture out of the classroom.

Students will be delighted as they create their very own tea set! It will include a handmade tea pot, with cups and saucers to match and the decorations are entirely up to you. Be inspired to create something truly unique.

Explore different habitats, different animals and different painting techniques as we create artwork of our favorite creatures!

Do you love to sketch and draw? Have stacks of paintings and art you’ve created? Create a sketchbook to keep all of your art in one place. Students will learn the basics of bookbinding and assemble handmade sketchbooks. Once complete we will explore art processes to fill the pages. This is a fabulous keepsake and a skill you will be able to do again on your own.

Get ready to roll, twist, bead and sparkle. Campers will transform colorful paper into amazing, wearable works of art. From rainbow bead necklaces to funky bracelets and more, you’ll learn how to cut, coil, glue and design your own one of a kind jewelry creations and design a jewelry box too!

Create artworks inspired by music from around the globe. “Travel” the world and experience local and exotic destinations…participate in a different cultural tradition each day. This multimedia class gives the student the opportunity to learn and experiment with basic art concepts and techniques in a hands-on environment.

Lights, curtain, action! In this imaginative camp our young artists will step into the exciting world of theatre. Students will decorate their own puppet stage, create a variety of puppets full of personality and charm, and perform a short story play, bringing everything to life!

Ready to make your mark? In Wheat Pasting 101, students will dive into the bold, creative world of street art while learning the basics of this classic poster art technique. We’ll explore how to design eye-catching graphics, mix and apply wheat paste, and safely install artwork on prepared
surfaces.

Participants will create their own large scale poster using drawing, painting, or printed designs–then learn how to paste it up for maximum visual impact. This hands-on workshop is about big ideas, creative expression, and learning the foundations of an art form that has been used for everything from activism to pop culture.

Crochet is a wonderful handcraft to learn and be creative with. Join us in the art studio and learn the basic stitches and how to read a pattern, learn the foundation and work your way up to Amigurumi stuffed toys!
