MONSTERS, CREATURES, & DEMONS: The Underworld in Art
From St. George and the Dragon to the Dragons of the Emperors of Tang China, creatures of all kinds have appeared in the visual arts for a variety of reasons. Some are evil denizens from Hell. Others are guardians of tombs. Some are benevolent protectors of the people. Whatever the reason, monsters of all kinds have constantly challenged the artist’s imagination. Even Michelangelo, the patriarch of human beauty, conjured up hideous beast. Please beware: this lecture may cause nightmares.
November 14 | 11:30 AM–12:30 PM
THE HISTORY OF THE CLEVELAND MUSEUM OF ART/JOHN HUNTINGTON
The Cleveland Museum of Art is one of the finest museums of art in the nation as well as the world. Cleveland has one of the greatest collections of eastern art and their medieval holdings are admired the world over. This program will look at their most prominent works.
December 12, 11:30AM-12:30PM
THE BOOK DIVINE: The History of Manuscript Illumination
Illuminated manuscripts are hand made books that feature beautifully written text, decorated initials, and luminous colorful illustrations, often set on gleaming gold leaf backgrounds. These book illustrations are sometimes referred to as “miniatures”, but there’s nothing minute about their significance in European art history. The new Christian faith was instrumental in spurring the invention of the bound book in the 4th century AD, and it was through the inventiveness of illuminators that some of the greatest masterpieces of western art were produced. Enjoy a world of luminosity in this presentation.
