Fall + Winter Classes

This course is designed for students who have a strong foundation in drawing and cartooning concepts. The sole purpose of cartooning or illustration is to tell a story. In this class, we explore not only telling a story but expressing individuality through the use of illustration techniques that can be applied in any medium. Students will participate in class critiques as they work together, discuss each other’s work, and support one another’s growth. Session break 2/17–2/21.

In this course Jim will teach basic drawing skills, showing how to give figures form and incorporating storytelling while helping you find your own personal style. Open to any skill level, this class will leave students with a cartooning portfolio to be proud of and tools to apply to any discipline of art. Session break 2/17–2/21/2025.

Participants will use digital and traditional media techniques to create posters, books, T-shirts and CD covers. Projects will be based on exploring the 10 top rules of graphic design; including hierarchy, usage of type and application of design solutions to products. Students will be encouraged to explore their ideas and imagination to create pieces that would communicate their ideas in the graphic medium. This program will encourage students to combine drawing and painting with typography, photography and digital media. We will be using Adobe Illustrator and Adobe Photoshop on MAC laptops (provided). Learn how to create your own Illustrations on Procreate! In this course you will learn the basics of digital illustration on programs such as Adobe Photoshop and Procreate. All skill levels welcome, no prior experience required. Students will learn how to utilize digital tools to experiment with various art styles, create their own characters, and bring their stories to life. We will create illustrations that focus on the storytelling aspect of illustration and cartooning. Focusing on how an illustration can enhance the text and also how illustrations can tell a story without any words.

Learn to mix ANY color with just a few base colors. Color theory concepts and terms will be de-mystified through discussion and hands on color mixing. We will explore how to develop color combinations for the effect that suits your own art process. This class will eliminate hesitation about how to use color in your work. All levels are welcome. Artist/Graphic Designer John Plymak is excited to offer this exploration of oil pastels, which have unique properties that are similar to oil painting, in a convenient pastel form. Class will consist of explanation, examples, and demos of oil pastels, followed by exercises for the student to become familiar with the media, and concluded with a simple still life pastel painting.

Pottery is an exciting and mysterious craft, whether you imagine yourself on the potter’s wheel or creating hand built objects, we offer you everything you need to embark on a journey exploring the endless possibilities in ceramics. For beginners we will offer a range of assignments in the basics of hand building and a taste of throwing together with glaze demos. More experienced students will have the opportunity and guidance to improve skills and create both artistic and functional forms. Classroom is wheelchair accessible.

Families will explore the beauty of autumn leaves through a variety of fun and imaginative art projects. From leaf rubbings and prints to garlands and animal creatures, there’s something for everyone to enjoy. Don’t miss out on this wonderful opportunity to create beautiful autumn memories with your family! Limited to 8 families with max of 6 participants per family.

Create your very own, unique silver and leather cord bracelet. We will forge chain links out of silver wire, use a micro-torch to solder them together and use hammers and stamps to create texture. When the links are finished, we will learn how to attach a stainless steel bayonet clasp and silver cord tips to a length of round braided leather. How will I create my own bracelet in my own style? I will give you choices for your design-3 different sizes of links, whether or not you keep them round or make them into paperclip links, three different colors of braided leather, and a variety of hammers and stamps that can create texture and patterns you like. You will make one bracelet. As a bonus, we will create one pair of elegant everyday earrings with the leftover links and French ear wires in silver. Come metalsmith with me at BAYarts! Painting in a series helps develop a cohesive group of work. Building a series is a commitment to a theme, subject matter or color palette. It’s a great way to grow as an artist. This class is a (3) 4-hour session. Each week the instructor will demo a technique to consider for your series. Instructor will be using acrylics and abstract painting as a starting point. Your series can be anything you like. This is a guided studio course with minimal lectures. This will allow plenty of time for painting and discussion. Intermediate level-some experience using paint. We will be focusing on the Danish concept of hygge, creating warmth and atmosphere through our writing. As winter is the perfect time for self-exploration and illumination, we will be using memoir to capture our inner hygge and to bring light to winter’s darkness.
