This course is designed for students who have a strong foundation in drawing and cartooning concepts.  The sole purpose of cartooning or illustration is to tell a story.  In this class, we explore not only telling a story but expressing individuality through the use of illustration techniques that can be applied in any medium.

Crochet is a wonderful handcraft to learn and be creative with. Join us in the art studio and learn the basic stitches and how to read a pattern, learn the foundation and work your way up to Amigurumi stuffed toys!

This class is designed for students that want to explore the foundations of art while building confidence in their creativity. A CCAD alum, published illustrator and comic artist, Jim will teach students the basic drawing skills such as shading, perspective, and proportion, then apply those techniques to painting with acrylics, ink and watercolors. Each session will introduce new tools and methods in a fun and supportive environment, encouraging experimentation and self-expression. By the end of the course students will have a portfolio of finished artwork and a stronger understanding of how to bring their ideas to life. Whether you doodle, want to try painting for the first time or just enjoy making art with friends, this class is a great place to start.

This exciting course includes themed projects such as natural forms, still life, landscape, portraiture, animals, buildings and architecture. While enhancing technical skills, personal expression, imagination, sensitivity, conceptual thinking and powers of observation and analytical thinking.

Build up your portfolio, learn new techniques and gain confidence in handling a wide variety of art materials. Drawing in pencil, ink, charcoal and pastel and painting in watercolor, gouache, acrylic and oil will all feature, as well as mixed media, collage, sculpture, lens-based media and graphic design. As each student gains in confidence, they will be encouraged to work on a more ambitious scale and with a greater degree of independence.

This 5-week class provides the perfect start to a journey into the foundational aspects of copperplate calligraphy. This form of pointed pen can be used for addressing envelopes, place cards, writing quotes, or adding touches to your personal artwork. Students will learn the proper posture and method for use and care of the oblique nib holder and pointed nibs. Starting with minuscules (lower case) and then majuscules (uppercase) we will learn the letters by form and shape and connect them to write words.

$25 supply fee due to instructor.

Start from scratch as you learn the fundamentals of wheel throwing.  Beginner students will learn and practice basic wheel throwing techniques, centering the clay, opening the clay, and raising the wall. Advanced students will be shown and encouraged to practice more complicated forms and techniques. Assignments are designed to encourage students to expand their level in pottery making.  Decorating and glazing techniques will be explored.  Returning students are welcome in this creative community.

Bijouterie is the French word for ‘jewelry,’ and in this fun evening class, instructor Brenda Glasure will guide students in making a pair of sparkling earrings on French earwires. Participants will learn techniques such as shaping, hammering, stamping or texturing, sanding, cupping, and attaching their earrings. Bring friends or family and enjoy a creative night together. All materials and safety gear are provided.

Welcome in the season of Spring by creating a set of flower themed prayer flags. Pair colored backgrounds with line art floral designs using sharpies to create 5 prayer flags, dip dyed in a color bath before stringing them in preparation to hang at home. Great for a porch!

As the garden wakes up, so do its quiet little guardians. In this create night pottery class, you’ll hand-build small spring gnomes meant to nestle among blooms, herbs, and winding paths. Using simple beginner-friendly hand-building techniques, you’ll shape your gnome’s form and add soft details and textures that give it a sense of story and personality. No prior pottery experience is needed. After firing, your gnome will be ready to bring in a touch of wonder and charm to your indoor or outdoor space all season long.

Immerse yourself in clay and color with our 2-week workshop. In the first session, you’ll explore hand-building techniques to shape fun and functional indoor playful planters. In week 2, transform your creations through the art of painting and glazing, layering depth, texture and a luminous finish.

What do you get when you layer colorful, shaped layers of paper? A dimensional collage!
We’ll start with a basic sketch to determine the layers and shapes, moving onto create an assortment of painted papers. Once dry, you’ll draw the silhouettes of the shape and cut them out. We’ll use fine line, markers to add details to the layers before assembling them to create the final piece, which will be mounted on a mat board, ready to lean, hang or frame at home.

Students will learn to balance contrasting color, texture, pattern, tonal relationship and form while building confidence using personal brushwork.  Use of warm and cool colors, wet-into-wet blending, glazing, perspective and palette organization provide the knowledge to complete a composition. Open to all levels, yet some experience is helpful. Please come to the first class prepared to discuss which color medium you will choose and with all materials. Class is located on the second floor.

Explore a variety of artists and techniques in this three-week mixed media class. Each session will revolve around an artist and the style they used to create their masterpieces. While we pull inspiration from the greats, each art piece is sure to be your own.

Give life to leftover yarn! This playful crochet series focuses on upcycling, scrap busting and creative freeform projects that make the most of what’s already in your stash. Transform your yarn odds and ends into colorful baskets. You’ll learn how to blend colors and textures for unique storage pieces that are both practical and fun. We will also learn how to turn basic granny squares into fun blankets and garments. Learn to join as you go with new techniques and learn to embellish existing garments with freeform crochet or embroidery techniques.

**ALL LEVELS: this course is suitable for absolute beginners but will also be valuable to those who already have a crochet practice.

Feel free to bring along any crochet hooks you may have.

Students will create a 3D landscape art tile by sculpting forms, adding texture using clay to build up-or subtract from the surface to create shadows. Engage in a tactile experience using stamps, tools or fingers to create patterns and visual interest. The finish when fired, will be using the underglaze stain method. Students are encouraged to bring in photos of landscapes; the studio will also provide images for inspiration.

Flutter into Earth Day fun! In this playful hands-on class, students will paint and embellish their very own butterfly house using bright colors and nature inspired designs. We’ll talk about how butterflies help flowers grow and why they’re so important to our planet-then let creativity take flight! Each student will leave with a one-of-a-kind butterfly home and a big smile, ready to help our Earth bloom.

A threader earring is a single piece design that is simple and elegant. We will create an ear wire that will be soldered to a small ring, diamond, rectangle, or paperclip shaped silver piece, the choice is yours! We will learn to create the gracefully arched ear wire, sand, forge, texture, and shape the piece, solder to the ear wire using a small torch and polish the finished earring. This simple, gorgeous, lightweight design is bound to become your new favorite for everyday wear.

Step into the world of magic and imagination! In this three-session art class, we will explore and create art inspired by mythical creatures. Perfect for creative kids who love fantasy, storytelling and making art that feels truly enchanted!

A 3-day workshop that will walk you through how to create expressive portraits in oil paint. Working from life and photographs, this workshop will emphasize a fresh and loose approach to brushwork and painting while retaining a likeness, in contrast to painting that can become tight or overworked. There will be logical progression each session with the goal each day to produce one painting, working wet into wet, or Alla Prima. Program Description

Oil pastels were originally formulated so Pable Picasso could have portable access to oil medium when traveling! Graphic artist and illustrator John Plymak is excited to offer a workshop exploring this unique medium, which has properties of both oil paints and traditional pastels. The workshop will consist of demos and exercises to get familiar with the medium, as well as a short, finished drawing, with instructor input. Material list will be provided.

This class covers wheel throwing, hand-building, and glazing for all experience levels. Continuing students may work on independent projects while beginners will be offered specific projects incorporating hand-building modeling methods like slab, pinching and coiling, creating a wide variety of ceramics for the home and garden. Join us for an evening of pretty lettering! Whether you’re a stationery nerd, DIY bride-to-be, or just a craft individual, in this workshop you’ll be learning an introduction to modern calligraphy with a pointed dip pen and ink. We will cover all of the basics and get you ready to add those special lettered details to your snail mail, wedding paper goods, home decor and more! The perfect craft night out class includes instruction and demonstrations, our beginner calligraphy kit, and all materials to write on. Everything is yours to keep at the end of the workshop!

Yes, lefties are welcome too. This class is encouraged for someone who has never taken a calligraphy class before. We teach the basics and our expectation for you is to have ink flowing through your nib with enough confidence to be able to practice way beyond class. If you have tried calligraphy before, this class will be a great refresher and hopefully a chance to try some supplies from our beginner kit.

Celebrate National Unicorn Day in the art studios with some of BAYarts favorite instructors! You’ll create a variety of colorful unicorn themed crafts like a unicorn stuffie, unicorn themed wall hanging and a puppet! Bring along a water bottle and an allergy free snack to keep the creativity flowing!

Learn the art of printing with personalized designs of your choosing. Students will draw and trace their designs onto craft foam, glue it to a backboard to create their unique stamp. Once your layout and pattern placements are set, you’ll use fabric paint to print on a cotton tea towel. Your towel will be set with an iron so it’s ready to use and wash.

Feel free to bring an additional item of your own like a t-shirt or tote bag to print on as well. You’ll leave with your printed items and the stamps created so you can keep creating at home.

Celebrate National Puppy Day and learn basic embroidery techniques while embellishing a portrait of your favorite furry friend. Please send a photo of your pet before class begins to Shay@bayarts.net to be transferred onto muslin.

No prior art experience necessary-just creativity and a willingness to experiment!

Celebrate yourself, your mom or friends by creating your own hand stamped charm jewelry. We’ll use metal stamps and charm tags to create dainty charms for 18-inch necklace and hand wrap beads to adorn your final piece. A fun evening out to create a meaningful gift just in time for Mother’s Day.

A mixed media masterpiece that will show off your artistic skills and become a special summer keepsake.

Wake Up Your Surfaces! Jenny will lead a 2-day workshop and trek through the imaginative use of color and surface decoration. She will demo, present technique and talk about her process to help and inspire participants to develop a unique color palette and narrative of their own.

On Saturday, students will hand build a simple structure like a mug, tumbler or vase plus a small dish in preparation to dry to leather hard overnight, ready to explore the surface to paint and decorate with underglaze the following day. This will be a creative and emotional exploration of the surface.

Jenny Mendes is a nationally and internationally known ceramic artist. She works using human and animal imagery to tell stories and works intuitively trusting the artistic flow. Her use of pattern and color is inspired by mythology and folk art .

Create simple forms, on which we’ll practice 6 different techniques of underglaze painting. Try your hand at sgraffito, Mishima, stenciling, applique, slip trailing and feathering.
