With intuition as a guide, artist Mary Ann Sedivy explores abstract compositions. This collection of spontaneous fresh paintings have underpinnings of the landscape and elements of structures. Energetic brush work paired with vibrant color accentuate the improvisational nature of these works.
Artist Statement
An artist can get stuck in effective and good creative habits. Shaking things up can shift perspective and open up new creative channels.
A few years ago I took a workshop which introduced me to the process of painting with acrylics on paper while layering in collage media. Usually I paint landscapes in oils. Since taking the workshop, while still pursuing landscape painting, I’ve continued playing with acrylic painting on paper.
This collection of spontaneous, fresh paintings is the result of that play. The paintings have underpinnings of the landscape and elements of structures set in an abstract format. Energetic brush work paired with vibrant color accentuate the improvisational nature of these works.
The beautiful textures made by the paint brush, color mixing, compelling placement and layering of color are common to landscape painting. Stepping outside my color comfort zone by choosing color combinations I don’t normally use shook up the creative process. Intermixing other media such as charcoal and pencil into paint layers along with collage papers pushed the artistic edge.
Allowing intuition to guide my painting process helped me cross the bridge to producing abstract compositions. Questioning. Making way for possibilities and solutions.
