This course is designed for students who have a strong foundation in drawing and cartooning concepts. The sole purpose of cartooning or illustration is to tell a story. In this class, we explore not only telling a story but expressing individuality through the use of illustration techniques that can be applied in any medium. Students will participate in class critiques as they work together, discuss each other’s work, and support one another’s growth.

Take your drawing and cartooning skills to the next level with Jim Giar. Jim attended CCAD, studying illustration and photography. He adopted advice from his illustration instructor as a lifelong mantra: “every illustration should tell a story.” Recently he has contributed to several anthologies, including the Harvey Award nominated Once Upon A Time Machine published by Locust Moon & Dark Horse Comics, as well as the New York Times best seller FUBAR: Empire of the Rising Dead. He shares his love of comics with kids, looking to motivate the young storytellers of the future to continue telling stories through the use of sequential images, a talent, Jim feels, exists in all children. In this course Jim will teach basic drawing skills, showing how to give figures form and incorporating storytelling while helping you find your own personal style. Open to any skill level, this class will leave students with a cartooning portfolio to be proud of and tools to apply to any discipline of art.

Participants will use digital and traditional media techniques to create posters, books, T-shirts and personal logo development. Projects will be based on exploring the 10 top rules of graphic design; including hierarchy, usage of type and application of design solutions to products. Students will be encouraged to explore their ideas and imagination to create pieces that would communicate their ideas in the graphic medium. This program will encourage students to combine drawing and painting with typography, photography and digital media. We will be using Adobe Illustrator and Adobe Photoshop on MAC laptops (provided).

This exciting course includes themed projects such as natural forms, still life, landscape, portraiture, animals, buildings and architecture. While enhancing technical skills, personal expression, imagination, sensitivity, conceptual thinking and powers of observation and analytical thinking. Build up our portfolio. Learn new techniques and gain confidence in handling a wide variety of art materials. Drawing in pencil, ink, charcoal and pastel and painting in watercolor, gouache, acrylic and oil will all feature, as well as mixed media , collage, sculpture, lens based media and graphic design. As each student gains in confidence, they will be encouraged to work on a more ambitious scale and with a greater degree of independence.

Come Metalsmith with me in this step-by-step workshop. You will create a paperclip bracelet with a unique, double-sided charm. I will teach you how to hammer silver and copper into textural steel plates to produce a textured design. We will dome both of the charm halves, and solder them together. You choose your design, and measure the paperclip to best fit you. The length is adjustable. In Argentium Silver, copper, and stainless steel. All materials, tools, and safety equipment are provided. Please bring reading or prescription glasses to class as you will need them.

Students will be introduced to techniques like tearing, cutting, gluing, and composition planning. Open to abstract painters and any artist who would like to incorporate abstraction into their current art practice. Participants will work independently in any direction(s) they choose. The instructor will provide individual support and guidance as well as discussion topics.

Come to the workshop geared with your favorite painting medium (watercolors, acrylics, oils or pastels) and supplies to paint a scene outdoors on the BAYarts campus.

First we will have a discussion, assess materials and then head outside for some sketches before returning for a friendly critique of composition choices. We will the travel out to paint. You will break and lunch on your own. The day will end with a group discussion and friendly critiques. Bring along lunch. Intermediate level.

Have you ever wanted to create a puppet like you might see at the popular “Parade the Circle?”   In this 3-week workshop, Mic will assist students in the art studio as they bring concept to conception creating their own oversized paper mache puppet head using unique materials and interesting techniques. Great session for problem solving and uber creative kids that love 3 dimensional art!

Do you want to improve your drawing skills? Good sketches lead to good drawings! All you need are a couple of pencils, an eraser, and a sketchbook.

Here’s how we’ll do it: We’ll gather as a friendly group and I will introduce you to a few sketching exercises in graphite pencil. Then we’ll disperse and wander the BAYarts campus where you will sketch the next assignment. Next, we’ll come back together to discuss and share your results. After that comes round #2! You’ll get another assignment, and head off for more sketching, followed by more discussion and sharing. Finally, round #3 and wrap up with some quick sketches.

It will be a mindful, meaningful, and relaxing day, in which you will build your sketching and drawing skills. This class is for all levels.

Come Metalsmith with me and make your own slider clasp bracelet with a charm that is uniquely yours. We will hammer silver and copper into textured steel plates, create and solder a ringed attachment, solder the two sides of the charm together and finish with a stainless steel slider-clasp chain. You choose your own design plate to make your bracelet one of a kind. All materials, tools, and safety equipment are provided.  If you use reading glasses or prescription glasses, please bring them to class.

Skill set: Hammer, solder, file and polish metal and use a variety of tools.

Using acrylics and/or Oil, learn the fundamentals of painting, from organizing a palette and blending, color mixing, brushwork, and glazing techniques to the elements of design and composition. All levels are welcome, especially beginning painters! Supply list will be provided prior to class. Class is located on the second floor.

This is an after school class that will allow your teen to work and play in clay without the pressure of school. It’s a wonderful chance to socialize while learning hand building, wedging, wheel throwing and exciting glazing techniques and combinations, giving them an opportunity to expand their skills, build creativity and find their voice.

I share the short cuts and tips that took me years to learn.
