Location

Sullivan Family Gallery

In September of 2018, artist Max Markwald legally changed his name to Max Lukas Markwald and began painting himself once a month for a year as a way of documenting his gender transition.  Instead of depicting a fluid transition, each painting became an obscured portrait- hiding in full view.  Three years prior to this transition, Markwald’s instructor at the University of Akron advised that he should “think about what it means to be a female artist.” Caught off guard he replied “I don’t want to be a female artist, I just want to be a painter.”  In this show, Markwald shows us he is just that – a painter.
