Beginning Watercolor: Summer Twilight

During this 6 week course, students will learn the basic steps, processes and techniques of watercolor painting. Students will study and learn how to see their subject(s) in terms of spatial relationships with the aim toward establishing an expressive and unified composition. The instructor will help students improve in their methods of paint application, color mixing and visual representation. The appropriate tools and materials and things to consider when setting up a proper work space will be discussed on the first day of class. For those students who have taken this course before; the instructor will continue to help you develop your painting skills and provide guidance in making appropriate choices in setting up subject matter. If weather permits, some classes will be held outside.

Mr. Raack studied art at the American Academy of Art in Chicago & at Cooper School of Art in Cleveland. Following graduation he worked for two years as an illustrator for American Greetings and taught drawing/painting at Interlochen Center for the Arts and at Cooper School of Art. He received an MFA in Painting from Kent State University and taught Painting/Drawing/Design for twelve years at the University of Akron and for twenty-two years at the Cleveland Institute of Art. Mr. Raack draws and paints from direct observation with the emphasis on seeing how color relationships function to convey a sense of space, light and movement. He's completed over 40 commissioned paintings in the past twenty years, half of which were for CWRU. He's exhibited his artwork in many museums & galleries as well as being included in large number of regional, national & international juried exhibitions, winning numerous awards. He has a studio in the Shore Cultural Center in Euclid, Ohio. Examples of his work can be viewed at

Paper, Brushes, Etc

Two sheets (22” X 30”) of 140# Arches cold press watercolor paper

(Don’t buy lesser paper)

#10 round watercolor brush (can be a synthetic, but should come to a point)

2” wide flat Hake’ brush

Plastic palette approximately 12” X 16” with wells around the outer edge and cover

One-inch wide masking tape (not drafting tape)

One roll of paper towels (recommend regular Viva)

Small bucket for water

Nonporous drawing board 20” X 26”

#2 or HB pencil and a Kneaded Eraser

Registration Fee & Cancellation Policies

Registration: Students are not registered until tuition is paid and all forms are completed. When registering for classes on paper, rather than online, a completed registration form and health release form must be completed.

Refunds: If a student is unable to attend a course and they inform BAYarts Registrar 7 days prior to the start of the class, a full refund or class credit will be given. If the Registrar is notified less than 7 days and more than 2 days before the start of class, a class credit will be given minus a processing fee. (Processing Fee = 25% of the tuition paid for class) No refund if notified less than 2 days before the start of class or workshop.

Missed Classes: Fees are NOT refunded or pro-rated for missed classes.
