The schools may be closed but that’s a perfect chance to spend the day at BAYarts. Multiple workshops for MLK (Jan 19th) and President’s Day (Feb 16)
Art Challenge
with Erin Stack
ages 12 and up
Each student will be given a photo of the Terminal Tower in Downtown Cleveland. By selecting from a hat,
each student will be given the name of a 20th Century artist. Reference books will be available for each
of those artists. Students will have the afternoon to incorporate the Terminal Tower into one of the artists’ paintings
while also working in their style. Students will be given a stretched canvas to work
upon and will participate in a mini exhibition when the projects are complete.

Grid It
with Erin Stack
ages 12 and up
Learn how to use the “grid” technique to transfer an image from photo to large scale paper. After the
drawing has been transferred, students will complete the drawing in the medium of their choice.
The teacher will contact students prior to class to discuss photo options.

Jasper Johns
with Erin Stack
Ages 9 and up.
Explore the art of Jasper Johns. Discuss his use of paint, color and composition. Using a
22’ x 28’ stretched canvas, stencils and acrylic paint, create your own “Number” painting.

Beginners Pen and Ink

Start with simple patterns and learn to put them together.
Sketch an outdoor scene suited to our location.

Acrylic Abstract
with Mel Grunau
All good realistic paintings have a strong abstract structure. We
will concentrate on creating only the abstract forms without
the realism. This will be accomplished utilizing techniques such
as pouring, brushing, spraying and scraping paint.

Mask Making
with Carol Lynn Mitchell
Mask making explores the idea of storytelling from the inside
out. Participants will share their stories as well as artistic
inclinations in a mask making workshop using paper mache
and mixed media. No artistic experience is required and all are
encouraged to bring found and personal objects to incorporate
with collage and painting techniques.

Photography
with DA Black
Broaden your photographic technical knowledge to achieve
pristine scenic landscape and cityscape images. Expand your
creative horizons through seeing and capturing pure light.
Light, be it natural or artificial, is the key factor in producing any
photograph. This workshop will open with a short slide presentation.
Topics for the morning will include apertures/f-stops,
shutter speed, depth of field, reciprocity failure and more. An
open discussion will provide the students with an opportunity
to ask specific questions that will increase their understanding
of specific photographic techniques.

Handpainting on Silk
with Gunter Schwegler
Explore silk painting in a focused, hands-on workshop and create
2 silk scarves or banners. Topics will include drawing, color
theory, art history, shading and perspective. This workshop is
open to all skill levels. All materials are included.

Pastel
with William V. Mannion
This workshop will cover the aspects of composition, creative
approaches from first impression to the actual process to
completion. Emphasis will be on contrast, shapes, negative and
positive, color harmony, simplicity and balance. There will also
be a slide presentation of various artists work in pastel. Bring
one or two pieces that you may have had trouble resolving and
a reference from which you would like to work. There will be
a still life set up if you choose to work from that which will be
the basis for the instructor demo.
